G&J Greenall have been producing gin since 1761 the year that Thomas Dakin built a distillery in the centre of Warrington. In 1860 Edward Greenall, a member of an established Lancashire brewing family, began to lease the distillery and, in 1870, purchased the enterprise outright. At a stroke the Greenall's acquired ownership of a successful business with an established distribution network. In 1894 the company of G&J Greenall became an incorporated company. The current Chairman of the Greenall Group, Lord Daresbury, is a direct descendant of Edward Greenall.
In the mid 1960s a new distillery, bottling facilities, and warehouses were built on land close to the site of the original distillery. This allowed Greenall's to expand into contract distilling and today they make a number of prestigious white spirit brands including Bombay Original and Bombay Sapphire. They are equally well known for their own gin brands, always described as Warrington Dry Gin to reflect their unique character.
Greenall's Original Gin contains 8 different botanicals including the less common cassia bark and ground almonds. It is distilled four times to a recipe dating back to 1761 in a still that was built in 1831. Greenall's Original is a high strength gin produced at 40% abv (80 proof) for the domestic market. It is strongly citrus on the nose, smooth and dry with a lingering, spicy, minty finish
There is also a premium export expression, Greenall's Special London Dry. It has more pronounced citrus flavours in the mouth and is bottled at 48% abv (96 proof). Both Greenall's brands have the distinctive smooth, slightly sweet creaminess that is the hallmark of Warrington gin , which tends to be less dry and less juniper dominated than the classic London Dry brands.
Greenall's has had great success in the RTD market with its Gin and Tonic in cans. Each can contains over 3 measures of Greenall's Original and over two measure of tonic water. Clean and refreshing this classic drink to go has a huge export market in Russia and Eastern Europe where just carrying the can around is seen as the ultimate in cool consumerism.
